Located just a 30-minute drive from Áldos Panzió, the enchanting realm of the Fertő-Hanság region and the living heritage of traditional village life await.
Sarród is a picturesque village in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, nestled between Lake Fertő and the Hanság in the heart of the Fertő-Hanság National Park. First mentioned in writing in 1313, its history is deeply intertwined with Lake Fertő, whose waters once reached the edge of local gardens. As the lake receded over time, the basin was converted into farmland, though fishing and reed-weaving remained vital crafts well into the 20th century.
Sarród’s most famous landmark is Kócsagvár, Hungary’s largest thatched-roof building, designed in a striking organic architectural style. The building is a true work of art in itself: its thatched curves evoke the sweeping wings of a heron, and its halls house interactive nature exhibitions.
Things to Do at Kócsagvár & Surroundings:
- Guided bird-watching walks and educational nature trails
- Bicycle rentals and scenic hiking routes
Nearby Lászlómajor, a former agricultural estate of the Esterházy family, features rare native Hungarian livestock breeds, an aromatic herb garden, and the official National Park gift shop.
Sarród is an integral part of the Fertő–Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape, designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
